What to expect at Belmont Chiropractic

If you’ve ever gone to a social event where you didn’t know anyone, you know how uncomfortable that can make you feel. Our goal is to eliminate every shred of apprehension and make you feel at home.

Since chiropractic care involves a series of visits, with each one building on the ones before, it’s important that our relationship can go the distance. We’ve found that one of the best ways to have successful patient relationships is to explain everything in advance. No surprises!

The more you understand who we are, what we do and why we do it, the better results you’ll enjoy. It’s as simple as that.

So, check us out here. Poke around. Get to know us. Then, contact us to make an appointment so we can get to know you.

You’ll be warmly welcomed and made to feel at home. Help is on its way!

We have developed a modern, contemporary space with the goal of providing state-of-the-art chiropractic care in comfortable surrounds.

Make yourself at home!
We have minimal parking at the rear of the building, which we have allocated for people who have difficulty walking. After your visit we expect you to walk for 5-10 minutes, so parking in another street or in Belmont Forum is a good idea. You’ll be greeted by name when you enter our office and given a short tour to get you acquainted with our facilities.

On entering, you’ll be greeted by name when you enter our office and given a short tour to get you acquainted with our facilities.

If you’ve already completed your admitting paperwork, great! If not, after doing so, you will then meet the Chiropractor who is going to care for you.

We explain everything first
The purpose of your consultation with the doctor is to discuss your health goals and see if chiropractic is likely to help you. If it looks promising, a thorough examination will help identify the cause of your problem.

If we are unable to find the cause of your problem, we will send you to someone who can.

Patients appreciate that we explain everything in advance!

On your report visit we explain what we found and how we may be able to help you.

After we study your health history and correlate our examination findings, we’ll make recommendations designed to help you get and keep your health. We call this the Report of Findings.

This is usually attended to on your second visit, which may be later the same day or the following day. This two-visit approach accomplishes several things:

  • Reduces the length of your first visit
  • Gives us time to correlate our findings
  • Avoids overloading you with too much information

In certain situations, and in the professional judgment of the team, we sometimes make exceptions. It just depends on your unique situation.

Regular Visits
After the investment of time needed on the first and second visits, many patients become concerned that every visit will be of equal length.

In a word: no. A typical visit may require just a few, highly-focused, minutes.

But don’t think the brevity of a regular visit lessens its value! With the groundwork laid, we can quickly size up what your spine and nervous system, adjust you and get you on your way.

Like a regular workout at the gym, each visit builds on the ones before. Miss a visit and we can lose the momentum necessary to make the needed changes.

We recognise your time is valuable. We do everything possible to run on time and minimise the impact on your busy life.

Who can benefit from chiropractic care?

At Belmont Chiropractic, we believe your body is designed to express health 100% of the time. Every organ and muscle in your body is 100% controlled by your brain. Your brain is connected to every cell in your body by your nervous system – most of which lives in, and is protected by, your spine. Any dysfunction in your spine, painful or not, creates interference with your nerve signals.

How chiropractic works

the why, the where, the how, the who, the how often of chiropractic

Could chiropractic help you?

Our chiropractic care is based on four core principles:

The first is that the body is a self-healing mechanism. Cut your finger and it heals, cut the finger a dead guy, it doesn’t heal. Life is what heals.

Second, the nervous system is the master system of the body. Every dimension of the human experience is processed through the nervous system. Every thought, every emotion, every perception every motor function everything that we experience as human beings is processed through the nervous system.

Third, an interference with the function of the nervous system will compromise your physical health. Not only this, it will distort your perception of what’s going on in the world as it compromises your ability to respond appropriately it can have psycho-emotional consequences as well. When that happens to a significant number of people in society, you have a sick society.

Finally, what we do as chiropractors is locate and correct the cause of that interference.

Why x-rays?

When you go to the dentist, you open your mouth so that your dentist can see inside?

How do you open up your spine so we can peek inside? Without much invasion, you can’t! That is why we take an X-ray of your spine. It allows us the best analysis and therefore, the best adjusting thrust to your spine.

The radiation dose from our machine is very small. So small it is hard to measure. A radiology lecturer at the university of one of our team of chiropractors was known to say quite regularly: “Standard chiropractic views of the spine give the patient much radiation as a return flight to Sydney.” You will not turn into a green rage monster!

Our films are $107, half the industry average. We do this so that we can reduce any financial hurdles for you while still giving us the diagnostic tools we require to provide the safest and most specific chiropractic care possible.

Health is normal

Chiropractic has been helping people of all ages with a variety of health issues for over a century without the use of drugs or surgery.

Chiropractors get proven results with these specific health conditions by using the best available evidence from research, the preferences of the patient and the expertise and personal experience of the individual chiropractor.

The clinic philosophy at Belmont Chiropractic is based on the following simple, common-sense principles. They serve as a guide as we assess your health, explain what we’ve found and make our specific care recommendations:

• Being healthy is your normal state
• Your nervous system controls everything
• Stress can overload your nervous system
• Spinal joint dysfunction is a coping strategy
• Adjustments help reduce spinal dysfunction
• You’ll likely need more than one adjustment
• How long you benefit from care is up to you

Your nervous system

Your nervous system, consisting of your brain, spinal cord and all your nerves, is the most vital system of your body. Its purpose is to coordinate and regulate all the other systems of your body as well as help you adapt to your environment. Just a few of the jobs it looks after, without a conscious thought from you are:

Producing stomach acid after a meal
Communicating with the immune system
Increasing your pulse when climbing stairs
Reducing your blood pressure when seated
Learning to crawl, walk or ride a bicycle
Producing pain when touching a hot stove
Perspiring to cool you when it’s hot

Your nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. Your DNA may determine your height or the colour of your eyes, but your nervous system controls and regulates how your body functions.

If your nervous system were to be impaired, interfered with or compromised so nerve messages to or from your brain were distorted, parts of your body may not work as intended. Stroke victims and those confined to wheelchairs are tragic and severe examples of this simple neurological fact.

That’s why the most significant parts of your nervous system are protected by bone. Your brain is protected by your skull and your spinal cord is covered by the moving bones of your spinal column.

Yet, even with this protection, interferences can happen. Especially along the spinal column. The most common (and overlooked) cause is stress.

An effect of stress

These days, stress is so common it’s often seen as “normal.” Since it’s unlikely that we can eliminate stress in our lives, improving our ability to withstand and accommodate it is important for our health.

There’s good stress and bad stress.
Positive Stress Negative Stress
A workout at the gym Lack of adequate sleep
One-day water fast Daily diet of fast food
Learning the piano Paying the bills
International travel Airline seats
Trying new foods Food poisoning
A glass of wine Three glasses of wine

Generally, stress falls into three categories:

Physical Stress – Repetitive motions (painting the ceiling), postural distortions (falling asleep with your neck twisted) and whiplash injuries from a car accident are physical stresses. So are slips and falls. Even a difficult birth or learning to walk.

Emotional Stress – Ever face an impossible deadline at work? Or grieved the loss of a loved one? Notice the posture of someone who is depressed. Anger, or a sense of hopelessness, are common forms of emotional stress that may affect the spine.

Chemical Stress – Today’s environment constantly assaults us with chemicals. Drugs, preservatives, tobacco, alcohol, pollen, pet dander, detergents, fabric softeners and a host of other substances that can affect our nervous system and muscle tone.

Stress produces a reaction in your body. Besides increased levels of stress hormones, the fight or flight response may produce spinal joint dysfunction. Think of it as your body’s circuit breaker.

When you’re ready to take action, ring us at Belmont Chiropractic to arrange your first visit: (08) 9478 1777.

Spinal Joint Dysfunction

If you suffer from spinal dysfunction, in which spinal bones are stuck, fixated and not moving properly, your ability to turn and bend can be compromised. When a spinal bone loses its normal relationship with the bone above or below it, it may set in motion a cascade of effects:

Reduced joint motion
Nerve irritation
Muscle spasm
Disc bulging
Joint degeneration
Numbness in the hands and feet
Pins and needles” sensations

As a short-term solution to overwhelming physical, chemical or emotional stress, spinal joint dysfunction is a brilliant coping strategy. Yet, when this stress response doesn’t resolve in a timely manner, or the stress is chronic, it may lead to other consequences.

Chiropractic is a natural healing art which detects the presence of these spinal joint dysfunctions and reduces them using chiropractic adjustments.

Chiropractic Adjustments

Newton’s Cradle on desk

Chiropractic adjustments add energy to your spine that is used by your body to help right itself.

After a thorough examination, a chiropractor adds energy to your spine at an opportune time and place to help your body “right” itself. Think of a chiropractic adjustment as a gentle “nudge” to help restore better movement to the spine.

While the word chiropractic comes from the Greek meaning “done by hand,” there are many ways to adjust the spine.

Whether done with actual hands, various types of handheld instruments, blocks that harness the effect of gravity or by other means, a chiropractic adjustment is distinguished by the chiropractor’s intention.

It surprises many to learn that the intent of chiropractic adjustments is NOT to treat a disease, reduce pain or any other symptom. Granted, that’s a frequent result, but that’s not the purpose of chiropractic adjustments! Instead, the intent of chiropractic adjustments is to help revive your spine’s ability to function more normally.

Helping your spine and nervous system to function to the best of its ability is the century-old basis of chiropractic. Treating symptoms and curing various diseases is the practice of medicine. Both have their place.

What do chiropractic adjustments feel like? Usually quite pleasant. Often patients mention that not only do they move better, but that they feel more “connected” and report a pleasant sense of ease and well-being. That’s important. Because repeated visits are often necessary.

Our Techniques

Our team of chiropractors predominantly employ one of three techniques: the Gonstead Chiropractic analysis and technique, the Diversified Technique, and the Thompson Technique. We have gravitated towards the use of these in providing chiropractic care in response to observing consistent results with our patients over many years.

Will I need need multiple visits?

Yes!Your brain has created a way for you to function without some of your joints working properly. When you come into our office we introduce some new information to your brain in the form of movement. This creates some new circuits in your brain.

The old neural pathways are fairly well established, though. They have probably been there for a while. This means that the new stimulus requires some repetition to make it stick. Your spine and brain are essentially learning a new trick. Like learning anything new, it takes repetition and time.

Do some people get some amazing changes in one or two visits. Absolutely! Could I look any of these folk in the eye and tell them that the function of their spine will be forever altered as a result of that one push? No!

Benefit as Long as You Wish

Have you heard the common urban legend that “once you go to a chiropractor you have to go for the rest of your life”? It’s not true.

There are two ways people choose to use chiropractic care in our clinic:

1. Relief Care
Many people seek care in our practice and have one goal: relief. So that’s where we start! During this initial stage of intensive care, we have several obligations:

Uncover the underlying cause of the health problem
Suggest a care plan to produce the fastest results possible
Offer ways patients can participate in their recovery
Explain the value of post-symptomatic wellness care

2. Wellness Care
We’re committed to teaching our patients that true health is a journey, not a destination. Through educational opportunities (like this website), we hope to communicate the value of ongoing chiropractic care. Our desire is to see our practice members abandon the prevailing sickness care model of health (waiting for symptoms and then taking action), in favour of the emerging wellness model.

We see our responsibility as offering optimal recommendations based on our education, training and clinical experience. Your responsibility is to decide how far you want to take your care and let us know how we can best serve you.

The bottom line? How long you choose to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you. Get started today. (08) 9478 1777
